Mangaluru, Dec 19, 2016: Reports confirm that Muslim women in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are coming together to oppose the central government’s move to ban triple talaq. Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts Muslim Central Committee has planned to hold a mass convention of Muslim women in Mangaluru on Dec 20, Tuesday.

The Shariat Protection Women’s Convention will provide platform for Muslim women leaders of various organizations to express their views on triple talaq and uniform civil code.  Sajida Moomin, convener of Shariat Protection Women’s Convention, said the issue of talaq is being projected as a gigantic issue due to political and other reasons.

"No one other than Muslim women can understand better what talaq actually is. However, the issue is being projected as a larger than life issue. An effort is being made to portray Muslim women as victims, who are denied their rights. A convention of Muslim women is being organized by various Muslim organisations in Mangaluru as a part of the nation-wide protests against the Centre," she said.

There are many civil codes and personal laws related to marriage and divorce as per the Constitution of India.

The central government’s plans of introducing Uniform Civil Code projecting the misuse of triple talaq exposes its anti-Muslim stand, she said adding all educated Muslim women should unite and raise voice against the conspiracy of communal forces.

There is an urgent need to protect essence of the Constitution of India. In this backdrop, a Shariat protection women’s convention will be held at the Town Hall here. Muslim Mahila Sahitya Sangha vice-president Zohara Abbas will preside over the convention.
