Keep temple surroundings clean, says Pejawar seer

Udupi, Jan 12, 2017: A decision to clean the surroundings of the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple on January 21 was taken here on Wednesday, at a meeting of citizens on a call given by the Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala D. Veerendra Heggade, to improve cleanliness in religious centres. A Task Force comprising citizens, devotees and representatives of the Ashta Mutts would oversee the cleanliness drive.

Speaking at the meeting, Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Paryaya Pejawar Mutt said that all efforts would be made to see that Car Street where the Ashta Mutts and the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple were located as a “shop-free zone”. This would be done with the cooperation of the government and through a peaceful manner without any conflict.

Already the Car Street was a “vehicle-free zone”, if all shops were moved from here, it would help in maintaining more cleanliness in the area. There was lack of space when various festivals were celebrated on the Car Street. It was essential to make alternative arrangements for the shopkeepers to shift, he said.

The cooperation of youth and citizens was essential to keep the surroundings of Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple, the Car Street and the Rajangana Parking Lot, clean. “In fact, the entire Udupi should become a clean city,” the Pejawar seer said.

Besides, the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple, it was essential that all religious centres gave importance to maintaining cleanliness. The disposal of food leftovers and maintenance of drainage system was essential, said Vishwaprasannna Tirtha, junior seer of Pejawar Mutt.

Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami of Shiroor Mutt, Shyamprasad Kudva, municipal councillor, P.K. Purushotham, Director of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, and others were present.
