Diabetes can be reversed with changes in ’lifestyles

Mangaluru, Mar 17, 2017: Speaking after inaugurating the 26th branch of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre at Maximus complex on Lighthouse Hill Road  March 16, Thursday, Coast Guard (Western zone) Commandant DIG K R Suresh, TM, said many people even in the armed forces give lame excuses that they are suffering from diabetes so that they can avoid duty. Citing the example of many elderly people including his mother who is 83 and who is a diabetic for the past couple of decades, he said diabetes can be managed with a few changes in lifestyle.

 Diabetes is not a disease to be feared. A few lifestyle changes and some discipline will go a long way in managing the disease.

Stating that an alarming ratio of India’s population is already diabetic and this is likely to double by 2030, Dr Mohan said that it is important to spread awareness that unless lifestyle and food habits are changed, diabetes will continue to impact the quality of life and productivity of  individuals.

Citing India is slated to become the diabetic capital of the world with over 69 million people impacted by diabetes, he said that Karnataka stands sixth in country with a diabetes prevalence of 7.5%.  Yenepoya Medical College HoD of Medicine Prof Prabha Adhikari lauded the efforts of Dr Mohan and said that apart from providing treatment, the centre would also take steps to ensure prevention of the disease.

Former HoD of KMC Prof Sydney D’Souza quoted actor Rajesh Khanna’s famous dialogue from the movie ’Bawarchi’, "It is simple to be happy, but it is very difficult to be simple." He hoped that many Mangaloreans would benefit from the centre as it offers diabetic care under one roof.

Multi services : Welcoming the gathering, Centre chairman Dr V Mohan said that the centre is India’s first one-stop comprehensive diabetes treatment facility offering multidisciplinary services like diabetes foot care, diabetes eye unit, nutrition and dietetics.

The centre has branches in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Coimbatore, Puducherry, Bhuvaneshwar and New Delhi among other places.  Mangaluru centre head Dr Shrikanth Hegde was at hand to reassure.
