Late Shri Ammembal Subba Rao Pai, a philanthropist, established the Canara Bank Hindu Permanent Fund in Mangalore on July 1906. Later, the bank changed its name to Canara Bank Limited in 1910 when it was incorporated. 

Canara Bank is among the oldest of Indian banks. Forbes Global 2000 list ranked it at 1299th position.
