Mangalore, Nov 5, 2012: Yesterday on the 4th November I was on my way to Udupi to attend a meeting of the Jatimukta Sambandha Vedike which is a forum to promote relationships between people regardless of their caste, religion or anything else for that matter, which is basically what Humanism is about! The organization has many members who have married people belonging to other castes, religions and also aids people to marry and also wants to establish support groups and counseling.
But the practical lesson on Jatimukta Sambandha was on the way. A few kilometers from Mulki at around 2.15 pm a slow truck overtaking a slower one hit a motorbike right in front of my eyes. The bike rider was overtaking another vehicle and both of them were thrown on the road and were unconscious. I was in two minds whether to pursue the hit and run truck or help the injured and took the humane choice of first helping them. I got off from my car and was trying to something for them but I was all alone and no one was stopping people were just peering out their speeding vehicles and going on. Then a car with a Muslim family stopped there were man and two women in the car. They tried to give water to the injured and tried to revive them. In the meanwhile another car this going in the opposite direction stopped and they too got to help. They too were Muslims. The boy appeared to be Hindu with a tilak and a thread round his wrist and the girl too appeared so. But, one of took a u turn and both of them took one each to the nearest hospital.
When I saw today’s eveningers I came to know that the injured were Arjun and Priya who were going from Mulki to Kavoor and are now hospitalized with grievous injuries. But, the lesson in humanism will go a long way. That the two Muslim families went out of the way to save the lives of these two unknown people while all the others were passing without even getting out of their vehicles and I was unable to do anything as I was alone in my car. These people went out of the way to help strangers despite the element of risk of communal minded people who could have always alleged that they were injured by the those who helped them.

Good people are born in all countries and religions. There are lots of nice people in our enemy countries too. Religions and countries build big walls to separate people. But majority are just like sheep doing what others do. |
