Mangaluru, March 3, 2025: Art knows no barriers, boundaries, or limits and S. M. Jabbar (Jabbar Samo) stands as a testament to this timeless truth. The celebrated Yakshagana artist has been conferred with the prestigious Muliya Thimmappayya Award in Udupi, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career.
Born in 1963 in Sampaje to S. Mohideen Kunhi and Beefathima, Jabbar exhibited a penchant for storytelling and performance from an early age. His deep-rooted passion for Yakshagana blossomed during his primary school years, where he made his debut as Danuja Guru in the play Bhakta Prahlada. This early exposure set the stage for a remarkable journey that would take him to national and international platforms.
With unwavering dedication, Jabbar played a pivotal role in establishing and nurturing several organizations aimed at promoting Yakshagana.
Mastering the Art
Jabbar refined his skills under the mentorship of Yakshagana stalwarts like Bali Narayana Bhagavata, Nidle Narasimha Bhat, and Diwan Bhima Bhat. Sharing the stage with legends such as Malingajja, he delivered captivating performances in a wide array of roles, including Bali, Shukracharya, Kartavirya, Vali, Sugriva, Ravana, Prahasta, Angada, Indrajit, Veeramani, Arjuna, Karna, Shalya, Bhima, Kauravas, Lord Krishna, Bhishma, Sudhanva, and Tamradhwaja. His versatility and artistry earned him widespread acclaim.
Service & Recognitions
Parallel to his artistic pursuits, Jabbar dedicated 28 years of service to the Karnataka Government’s Sericulture Department before opting for voluntary retirement. His unwavering commitment to Yakshagana earned him a place in the Yakshagana Academy.
Over the years, he has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Sandesha Pratishtana Award (Mangalore), Alva’s Nudisiri Award, Dakshina Kannada District Rajyotsava Award, Udupi Kalaranga Award, Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy Award, among others.
