Jan 26, 2019 - What are the things that can possibly delay a film’s release?
Okay, we will try and make a list. Cast and crew playing truant. Budget constraints. Lack of response from distributors. Inability to find the right theatres.
Well, you can list out many more. But never will it strike you to include the reason: Mind-boggling success of a teaser clip from the movie.
But, as it happens, it is because of a clip going sensationally viral that the Malayalam movie ‘Oru Adaar Love’ has been delayed for more than a year. It will make it to the theatres only on the coming February 14.
Of course, internet junkies will certainly recall ‘Oru Adaar Love’ as the movie that gave us the heart-melting clip of the ‘wink girl’ Priya Prakash Varrier.
The clip that was released around 2018 Valentine’s Day catapulted Priya into unexpected stardom that is so very possible only in this intensive Internet era. Priya ended up as the poster girl for school romances across the country, as her cute wink at her screen crush Roshan Abdul Rahoof became a national sensation.
The problem for the film was precisely that unmanageable success. The movie, with no big names, meant for a middling Kerala release, had to redone with elements that would at least half match the national acclaim that the viral clip got.
But the unprecedented spotlight on the film has also triggered interest from other languages. Along with Malayalam, the film is now being dubbed in Kannada and Telugu and released as ‘Kirik Love Story’ and ‘Lover’s Day’.
‘Oru Adaar Love’ is said to be a romantic comedy featuring a school and its students with plenty of teenage stuff forming its core. Shaan Rahman, who was the musician behind another internet hit song ‘Jimmikki Kamal’, has scored the music for this one. The film is directed by Omar Lulu.
The film’s promotion events have kick-started and on Thursday the team was in Hyderabad for the audio launch. Young Telugu star Allu Arjun, who enjoys a good amount of stardom among the youth sections of Kerala, was at the function. The understandably choreographed shots of Priya Varrier shooting kisses and winks at him during the event became the day’s staple on social media platforms.
At the event, Allu Arjun also gave another reason for social media to get all agog: He had a bizarre slip of the tongue. At one point, while wanting to say, ‘why did Kattappa kill Bahubali,’ he inverted it, and ended up saying, ‘why did Bahubali kill Kattappa’.
And the twitter troll brigade descended on him with typical unconcealed glee. But film stars like him know that all publicity, at the end of the day, is good publicity.
At the event, Priya Varrier, along with Noorin Sherif (who plays another young school girl in the movie) was inevitably demanded to reprise that famous wink from the film, too.
By the time the promo shows run the course, Priya is sure to be left with a painful, swollen eye.
