Feb 16, 2021:     Rihanna has caused an upheaval on Twitter yet again. The popstar made headlines earlier this month after tweeting in support of farmers protesting against the Indian government’s new farm laws. Her post went viral, with many calling her stance commendable, while others finding it infuriating. Her latest Twitter entry, in which she can be seen posing topless with a Ganesha neckpiece around her neck, has gone viral as well, causing outrage on Twitter over hurting religious sentiments.

On Tuesday, February 16, Rihanna took to Twitter to share a topless picture of herself donning a statement Ganesha necklace. The shoot was for her lingerie brand Savage X Fenty and the singer-actress can be seen wearing purple satin bottoms. Besides the controversial pendant, she wore other accessories such as diamond bracelets, neckpieces and statement earrings.Rihanna’s tweet soon went viral on social media and many people accused her of hurting their religious sentiments. One person wrote, “Rihanna !! stop using my religion as an aesthetic !! that Ganesh figurine at the end of the chain :( is a holy and sacred figure for us Hindus,” a Twitter user wrote in the comments (sic).”Rihanna drew massive international attention towards the farmers’ protest in India by tweeting about it. Reacting to an article about the suspension of Internet services in and around the farmers’ protest sites, Rihanna tweeted, “Why aren’t we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest (sic).”

After Rihanna’s tweet, many international public figures such as Greta Thunberg, Amanda Cerny and Mia Khalifa also tweeted about the issue. Many people praised Rihanna for raising her voice in support of the farmers. On the other hand, some questioned her motive behind meddling in another country’s matters. A lot of people also speculated if the tweet was paid and searched whether she is Muslim.

After Rihanna’s tweet, many international public figures such as Greta Thunberg, Hasan Minhaj, Lilly Singh, John Cusack, Amanda Cerny and Mia Khalifa also tweeted about the issue.

Diljit Dosanjh, who has been supporting the protest since the beginning even released a brand-new song titled RiRi on Rihanna after her viral tweet on farmers’ protest. On the other hand, a day after Rihanna’s tweet, Bollywood stars such as Ajay Devgn, Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar, and sportspersons such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble spoke in support of the Centre’s call to stand united against "propaganda" being spread against India’s policies.
