Shabana Azmi speaks up against Triple Talaq

July 05, 2016: Shabana Azmi, legendary actress and wife of noted lyricist Javed Akhtar has spoken on the practice of Triple Talaq in India.

In a Twitter post, Shabana said that India is one among the only three countries in the world which allow the controversial practice of Triple Talaq in one go.

 

“Of 52 Muslim countries only Saudi Arabia,Kuwait n India practice Triple Talaq in one go Even Pakistan n Bangladesh dont allow it why shud we(sic)” posted Shabana on her Twitter account.

Triple Talaq is a provision laid under the Muslim Law in the country, which is considered anti-women. Shabana also asserted that a Uniform Civil Code is needed, but on the condition that it brings gender justice.

Uniform Civil Code has always been a topic debate and dispute in India political and social spectrum. The Union Law Ministry had asked the Law Commission to examine in detail all issues pertaining to the Uniform Civil Code on Saturday.

The move has once again infuriated the debate on the long pending issue.
