June 22, 2012: Thailand’s popular Thailand Got Talent show sparked outrage all over the nation as a female performer in the reality show went topless to paint on a canvas with her bare breasts.
Duangjai Jansauoni made a headline grabbing performance as she went topless and with her back to the camera painted on the canvas with deft “breast” strokes. The program has sparked outrage in some circles with the government claiming it as “very shocking”.
Condemning nudity on national television, Culture Minister Sukumol Kunplome has demanded an explanation from the show’s producers who allowed for the broadcast of the act. “This programme is intended to showcase the talent of Thai people and it usually encourages youths to show their special skills. Still, there have to be some limits,” said Kunplome.
Despite its overly liberal image worldwide, Thailand TV is conservative in what it airs and frequently censors and blurs images of cigarettes, alcohol and nudity. Thailand’s Channel 3 that aired the show also followed the tradition of blurring the image of Duangjai’s bare breasts before broadcasting the act.
The act left judges in a dilemma as they debated whether the performance could be accepted. “I’m not saying this is not good, but it’s not appropriate. Within the Thai cultural context, I don’t support this,” said actress Pornchita Na Songkhla who was the sole female judge on the panel. Pornchita’s statement drew flak in online circles which circulated a 2010 picture of the actress wearing only melted chocolate on her otherwise naked body. The other two judges approved of the act and allowed Duangjai to proceed to the next round.
Meanwhile Thailand’s Got Talent has issued an apology for the act.
