Varanasi, January 21, 2025: Makar Sankranti is one of the biggest festivals in India. We often see people flying kites on this momentous occasion. But have you ever seen a monkey competing with humans? Well, we have come up with a (old) video featuring a monkey trying to fly a kite.

The video was posted on Instagram on January 6, just a few days before Makar Sankranti. A distant silhouette of a monkey on a roof is captured in the intriguing video. It appears as though the monkey is trying to get the kite to fly high in the air by pulling its strings in different directions, just like a person might.

After several frantic attempts, the monkey manages to bring the kite down and holds it. It appears intrigued and tries to figure out how the kite works by tossing and turning it.

The sound of laughter in the background as onlookers record the unexpected spectacle adds to the video’s entertainment value. “Ye Banaras hai guru, yaha bandar bhi patang urate h," the video features a text overlay that reads. The text in Hindi loosely translates to, “This is Banaras, where even monkeys fly kites."

Shared on Instagram on January 6, the video has collected over 31,000 views so far and several comments.

One user said, “OMG! Planet of the Apes begins."

Another commented, “He is staying in the future and thinking this is drone-based food delivery."

“It happens only in India," a user on Instagram said featuring the country’s distinct and frequently surprise viral moments.

“You have no idea what monkeys are capable of," another user praised the monkey’s talent.

As per reports, this video was first shared by former Indian Forest Service (IFS) Officer Susanta Nanda on his X account in 2020.

It went viral again in 2023 during Makar Sankranti. The clip had also garnered over 4.5 million views.

What do you think about this video? Did the monkey’s antics make you grin, too?
