New Delhi, March 07: From March 7 onwards, Delhi will hoist India’s largest flag in the country. The Central Park in Connaught Place is set to bear one of the tallest flags ever hoisted. Installed by the Flag Foundation of India, the monumental flag will flutter at a height of 207 feet from the ground.
The flagpole alone which has already been installed in the park weighs about 18 metric tonne and is equal to the third floor of the historic Qutub Minar (239.50 ft) in the city. Besides, the dimensions of the flag that will be unfurled on Friday are a staggering 60x90 feet (60 ft length and 90 feet breadth). “This will be the largest flag hoisted in India. Normally, flags have a dimension of 48x72 feet. The pole has been colored white and the pedestal on which it is erected is designed in a circular form to keep in sync with the aesthetics of the circular market,” said Commander KV Singh, CEO, Flag Foundation of India.
However, unlike other flags, this ‘monumental’ one will not be pulled down after every sunset. “Special lights have been arranged to keep the flag in prominence during the dark. In addition, the flagpole ends in a kalash (pot) similar to the gumbaz we find atop mosques,” added Singh. Hoisting and bringing down the flag will be a motorised process and will take at least six to seven minutes to reach the top. While Central Park will soon get its new landmark, the monumental flag will no doubt be listed among the tallest figures of Delhi. So far, the tallest structure in the city is the 335 feet tall Civic Centre. Second in the list is the Grand Intercontinental Hotel (328 ft), while the third one is Palika Kendra in CP (299 ft).
It took the Jindal group-owned Flag Foundation almost half a decade to get this structure installed in the Capital. The proposal was sent by NDMC to the DUAC which approved of the proposal. According to a Delhi Government notification, the Central Park of Connaught Place is listed as a heritage building. Permission was granted also after the approval from other parties concerned such as Airports Authority of India, heritage committee, and others.
