Bangalore, Dec 17: The 39th annual cake show held at Bangalore’s St. Joseph Indian High School has already attracted its share of attention thanks to an 18-foot-tall replica of Hyderabad’s historic Charminar and a gigantic head of Scotland’s Loch Ness monster, all made from sugar, eggs and flour. But the real showstopper was only unveiled today - a life-size cake of Sachin Tendulkar, holding his bat and cricket helmet in each hand. Spread over 10,000 sq feet, the cake is set to break the record for the world’s largest cake.
"I wanted to use my craft to honour Sachin, who has been my idol for years now. His passion for cricket has inspired me over the years," explains C. Ramachandran who created the cake. Ramachandran is also chairman of the Blue Hill Group and promoter of Nilgiri’s 1905. In the past he has created cake replicas of the Taj Mahal, the Titanic and Bangalore Palace.
Ramachandran and his team are also responsible for the Carminar replica on display this year at the show. The cake comprises of nearly five tonnes of sugar, several kilos of cream, hundreds of eggs and 40 people over 60 days to bake and decorate the cake.
The cake show which is on till December 29 also boasts of other cake models such as a special exhibit to commemorate 100 years of Indian cinema, Barbie dolls from over the years, castle cakes and a royal horse carriage cake. The organisers have also set up special counters that sell marzipan, chocolates, cookies and ice creams to visitors.
The show, held in association with the National Consumer Fair, has been listed several times in the Limca Book of Records for its spectacular cake displays.
