Kerala, Nov 14: Prince Charles on Thursday celebrated his 65th birth day at the famed backwaters resort of Kumarakom in Kerala.

For Charles, on a visit to India with wife Camilla, the celebrations were on a modest scale at the sylvan settings of the Lake Resort, where the royal couple have been staying since Tuesday evening.

Prince Charles celebrates his 65th birthday in ’only paradise on earth’ £500-a-night hotel with Camilla

Prince Charles, who is currently on an official tour of India with his wife, spent the morning of his 65th birthday on a break-neck string of official engagements in Kerala, southern India.

The prince had at least woken up to a view like no other to start the day.

He and his wife had checked into the £500 a night Presidential Suite at the luxury Kumarakom Lake Resort in rural Kerala on Tuesday night for some welcome down-time before the last day of their official tour to India.

Described as the ‘only paradise on earth’, the luxury resort is situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, a vast stretch of tranquil, emerald green backwaters.

It won’t have been quite the romantic getaway Camilla might have hoped. Thirty rooms were booked by the royal party and close to 400 police officers took over the security of the resort.

Still, the presidential suite was a by-word for royal seclusion: it has its own view of the lake, unimpeded by other guests, a private pool and courtyard.

On waking up this morning Charles was presented with a cake featuring a portrait of himself and his wife on it, according to aides.

He cut a slice to take to the plane later and arranged for the rest be sent to a local orphanage.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his family members called on the royals guests and presented gifts after extending warm birth day greeting to Charles, official sources said.

Though chefs of the resort had prepared Western and Kerala delicacies for the distinguished guests, both of them ate light for their lunch and dinner, preferring mostly fruits and tender coconut water.

They had begun their Kerala leg of the India tour by reaching Kochi on Monday and had been to nearby Vazhachal waterfalls before coming to Kumarakom in Kottayam district.

Charles and Camilla would be flying to Colombo this afternoon where the prince would be addressing the CHOGM meeting.
