Oct 16, 2017: These eerie pictures show thousands of dead fish floating in a river.
The images were taken at the ‘Confuso’ river, near Villa Hayes city, in Paraguay, yesterday.
Authorities are not quite sure what caused the fish to perish at the location, which is 30 kilometres north from Asuncio.
An official investigation has been launched to solve the mystery, with authorities looking into the factories that are located upstream.
Scientists theorized the fish may have died as a result of seaweed lowering the oxygen levels in the water.
At the time Gustavo Meneses, executive president of Costa Rica’s Fishing and Aquaculture Institute (Incopesca), told news.co.cr: ‘This is very atypical, not only because of the large number of fish found, but also because of the species, both these fish are around the same size, and the fact that they are appearing in this one specific place, we have a very healthy Nicoya Gulf, this makes it unusual.’
